Sardar Sarovar Dam Rehabilitation Project
📌 Kevadia, Gujarat, India,
Start: February 2021
The Project
The Sardar Sarovar Dam is a concrete gravity dam built on the Narmada River in Navagam, near the town of Kevadiya, Gujarat, India. The dam was built in order to provide water and electricity to four Indian states: Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan. The gravity concrete dam is 136m high with a crest length of 1300m. Over 300 Huggenberger sensors with Carlson technology were installed around 1994.
The Solution
The rehabilitation project was performed through our local subsidiary Huggenberger RT India LLP, a JV formed with our Indian partner Record Tech Electronics and was done in two steps. In 2021, we carried out a functional test of the existing instruments then we upgraded the system from manual to semi-automatic by installing Hek-Mux Boxes. In 2022, after the rehabilitation of the existing shafts we installed some new 76m long plumblines consisting of direct pendulums. We also supplied automatic Telelot VDD2v4 systems for measuring the horizontal deformations of the dam.
The Outcome
By switching from manual to automatic monitoring, the Client benefits from a quicker and safer monitoring of the concrete dam. This activity will also reduce the number of manpower hours required to monitor the dam ensuring the containment of operating expenses and the extension of the lifespan of the structure. We also want to thank Sardar Sarovar Narmada Navagam Ltd for the trust given.
